The Marga Klompé Building in Tilburg, designed by Powerhouse Company, is an innovative and sustainable university building of over 5,000 m², completed in 2023. It is the first university building in Europe constructed entirely of solid wood. This building integrates modern technologies for energy efficiency and has a minimal carbon footprint.

The building includes a foyer, an auditorium, 13 lecture halls and self-study rooms for about 1,000 students. In addition to the functional and educational spaces, the building has a unique aesthetic, inspired by the Cobbenhagen Building, with the use of natural materials such as wood, terrazzo and plaster. Large windows and strategically placed spaces provide abundant natural light and energy efficiency, contributing to a serene and stimulating learning environment. The Marga Klompé Building illustrates how modern academic architecture can combine sustainability with the need for diverse, functional spaces.

A key aspect of the design is compliance with strict fire safety regulations. To this end, aesthetically pleasing, Cradle to Cradle Silver certified and EI60 certified fire-resistant walls and doors from QbiQ were used. The iQ PROTECT Fire Hightech concept, with a unique profile height of only 33 mm, contributes to fire safety without compromising the design.

“The choice of QbiQ walls was essential because of their fire safety and aesthetic qualities. Their Cradle to Cradle Silver certification and slim profile of 33 mm aligned perfectly with our high circular ambitions for the Marga Klompé Building.”
